My 2014 PreLottery 2 Round NBA Mock Draft W/ Analysis

NBA Mock Draft 2014 – Pre Lottery
For this Mock Draft no trades can be made and the picks are based on team need and what I would do if I was the GM for each team I also assume that players whose contracts expire next year are not on the roster.

1.       Milwaukee: Andrew Wiggins, SF  6’8 220lbs 19 Kansas
Milwaukee needs talent and Wiggins is the most talented player available. He is a freak of an athlete and a great defender. He has the potential to be an All Star and most people think he will realize that potential. Wiggins next to the greek freak in the back court could be very fun to watch.

2.       Philadelphia: Jabari Parker, SF 6’8 240lbs 19 Duke
If Philly doesn’t get either Parker or Wiggins to be the focus of their roster for years to come then their tank-fest of a season will have been a disappointment. Parker will be an amazing scorer and has the ability to play the 3 and 4. He may be a bit of a liability on defense but his overall talent is just so high that it doesn’t matter.

3.       Orlando: Julius Randle, PF 6’9 225lbs 19 Kentucky
Before you attack me just listen. The Magic need a point guard desperately. But they are also starting Kyle O’Quinn at the 4. There are 3 good points in this draft and based on the needs of other teams between this pick and the 12, it is worth the risk. Any of the 3 could be there at 12. Randle is a double-double machine and could be the next Zach Randolph+ great athleticism. Even if the Magic can’t land their PG, this is worth the risk.

4.       Utah: Joel Embiid, C 7’ 250lbs 20 Kansas
It was recently pointed out to me that Favors signed an extension and will be on the roster for next season, since this is the case then the Jazz need to take the best player available and that is clearly Joel Embiid. He can take his time and become the dominant big man that he can be in a very solid front court rotation with Kanter and Favors.

5.       Boston: Dante Exum, PG 6’6 190lbs 18 Australia
With both Rondo and Bradley potentially on the way out, the Celtics will need a solid guard that has a chance at becoming a star. Exum has the potential  to be special and he will thrive with or without Rondo and Bradley on the roster.

6.       L.A. Lakers: Noah Vonleh, PF 6’10 240lbs 18 Indiana
The Lakers need whatever they can get and will take the best player available assuming they don’t trade down and in this scenario, they can’t. Vonleh is the best player available and he can contribute from day 1 in this huge rebuild. He can be the future of the lakers

7.       Sacramento: Marcus Smart, PG 6’4 225lbs 20 Oklahoma State
Isiah Thomas is a free agent leaving only 1 point guard on the roster. Smart is big, strong, and competitive and a natural leader, all things that the Kings desperately need in this rebuild. Even with Thomas, this would be a very good pick for the Kings.

8.       Detroit: Dario Saric, F 6’10 223lbs 20 Croatia
The Pistons will be begging Saric to come over now rather than later, he fits a huge need for the Pistons and is already one of the best players in Europe at only 20. He is a point forward and is a good fit and would balance the attack of the Pistons. He can also play either forward position effectively.

9.       Cleveland: Doug McDermott, SF 6’8 210lbs 22 Creighton
The Cavs aren’t getting Deng back. They need help at the 3 desperately and McDermott helps immediately. He is already a knock down 3 point shooter and a good scorer. Plus, he has a high basketball IQ which is a change for the cavs. Not a flashy pick, but a great pick.

10.   Philadelphia: Gary Harris, SG 6’4 210lbs 19 Michigan State
If Gary Harris can find his shot from his freshman year he will be a perfect fit next to Parker on the rebuilding 76ers. At the very least he will be a good defender and have motor for days. Harris does a little bit of everything and if he falls to the 76ers at 10 then they should be ecstatic.

11.   Denver: James Young, SG/SF 6’7 200lbs 18 Kentucky
James Young is a great shooter and scorer even if he was inconsistent in college. He won’t be asked to do too much on the nuggets and he will be able to thrive with wide open shots. He is a great fit on this team.

12.   Orlando: Tyler Ennis, PG 6’2 180lbs 19 Syracuse
Hey! The risk paid off and one of the 3 Point guards was available. It is probably the one they wanted the least but they have now improved at 2 positions instead of 1. I know it turned out that Aaron Gordon is available too but who knows if it would have ended up like that if they had taken the point guard they wanted. I think it worked perfectly. Ennis is a pure point guard that can manage a game and rack up assists. He is a very good fit here.

13.   Minnesota: Cleanthony Early, SF 6’8 215lbs 23 Wichita State
The Wolves need help at the 3 desperately. Very tempted to take Gordon but I wasn’t sure about the fit. Early is a good all around player that will be in the NBA for a long time. He can score, shoot, defend, rebound, and is a great athlete, not to mention a proven winner.

14.   Phoenix: Aaron Gordon, PF 6’8 210lbs 18 Arizona
The Suns are psyched that Gordon slipped this far. He is an elite athlete and defender, he could be Blake Griffin-lite in terms of highlight plays on sportscenter.  He is absolutely the steal of the draft thus far. Great piece for the future for a team that over achieved this year.

15.   Atlanta: Zach LaVine, G 6’5 180lbs 19 UCLA
Somehow the Hawks are solid once again despite having a subpar roster. LaVine is oozing talent and potential and is well worth any risk on his lack of playtime in college. He could be special one day.

16.   Chicago: Nik Stauskas, SG 6’6 190lbs 20 Michigan
Stauskas is one of the best shooters in the draft and is emerging as a scorer as well. He can even handle the ball in a pinch. He fits a need and is a perfect fit for the bulls.

17.   Boston: Rodney Hood, SG/SF 6’8 180lbs 21 Duke
Hood adds shooting and a huge body for a 2 guard to the rebuilding Celtics. He could back up or start for either the 2 or 3 and adds a lot of potential. Hood could be one of the more underrated players of the draft

18.   Phoenix: PJ Hairston, SG 6’5 220lbs 21 UNC
PJ Hairston has all the potential in the world, off court issues keep him from being picked before this but the suns won’t be able to resist his size, strength, and shooting ability. He can contribute off the bench immediately and be a change of pace to the PG tandem back court

19.   Chicago: Jusuf Nurkic, C 6’11 280lbs 19 Bosnia
The Bulls need an upgrade at the back up Center, Nurkic is huge and has good touch in the paint. He is very strong and will help anchor the defense while Noah is resting.

20.   Toronto: Elfrid Payton, PG 6’3 170lbs 20 LA Lagayette
Payton is very long and athletic. This makes him an elite defender and a good scorer off the dribble. He fills a hole left by Kyle Lowrey leaving in Free Agency. Very good fit with the run and gun Raptors

21.   Oklahoma City: Adreian Payne, PF 6’10 225lbs 23 Michigan State
The Thunder are in the rare place where they are fighting for the title while simultaneously stockpiling young talent. Nick Collison is the reserve PF as of now but he is getting older. And when Perkins is gone and Steven Adams takes over, Collison will back up Adams. This leaves room for Payne, a stretch 4 that can jump out of the gym. He is a perfect fit for the Thunder and fills a need.

22.   Memphis: KJ McDaniels, SF 6’8 220lbs 21 Clemson
Tayshaun Prince is not the long term SF for Memphis. McDaniels may or may not be, but he is very athletic and plays hard defense. He can  get to the rim at will and if he can develop a jump shot he will be a very good NBA player. Plus his hard nose style is perfect for the gritty grizzlies

23.   Utah: TJ Warren, SF 6’8 235lbs 20 NC State
Gordon Hayward is a restricted free agent and the Jazz may not be able to retain him.  Warren is a gifted scorer and a good defender, he is just lacking in the athleticism department. He could be great for adding instant offence off the bench.

24.   Charlotte: Jordan Adams, SG 6’5 220lbs 19 UCLA
The new Hornets need somebody. Anybody. Anybody that can score the basketball. They have good young talent but only Kemba is a threat to score. Jordan Adams is an elite scorer and a good shooter. He is a perfect fit for this team to come off the bench and put up points. They can give this kid the green light and just let him put up points.

25.   Houston: Kyle Anderson, PG/SF 6’9 235lbs 21 UCLA
The best fit of the draft! Houston needs help at the point guard and at the reserve small forward and Kyle Anderson is both of these things. Jeremy Lin is the back-up point and he is better suited off ball, so Anderson running with the second unit can play the point from the 3 spot. He is a great fit and a semi-novelty player that will fit in well on a team like the rockets

26.   Miami: Shabazz Napier, PG 6’ 170lbs 22 UCONN
The Heat only have 2 Guaranteed players on next year’s roster, so they will take whatever they can get. Shabazz is a great leader and a proven winner, he is tough and can defend as well as knock down 3s off the dribble. He could be a perfect fit on this team whether the big 3 come back or not.

27.   Phoenix:  Jerami Grant,  SF 6’8 203lbs 20 Syracuse
Jerami Grant is a great athlete and defender and his shot is even coming around. He could be a very good player in this league. Suns are lucky to get him here

28.   LA Clippers: Clint Capela, PF 6’11 222lbs 19 Switzerland
The Clippers get one pick in this draft and if Clint Capela falls all the way down to them then they will be delighted. He adds front court depth which the Clippers always seem to need. He will run, defend, rebound, and be a hustle player on both ends of the court. This could end up being the steal of the draft.

29.   Oklahoma City: CJ Wilcox, SG 6’5 180lbs 23 Washington
Wilcox fills in for the void left by Thabo Sefalosha. Jeremy Lamb steps into the starting roll and Wilcox becomes the 3 point dead eye off the bench. Wilcox can also contribute on defense. Very good pick up for OKC.

30.   San Antonio: Kristaps Prozingas, PF 6’11 220lbs 19 Latvia
Tim Duncan is getting old. This could be his last year and if not this year then next. He needs a replacement better than Aaron Baynes. Kristaps Prozingas has a chance at just that. He is huge, can play defense, can score in the paint, and has range out to the 3. If he comes over now then he can contribute right away hopefully learning from Tim Duncan.

31.   Milwaukee: Semaj Christian, PG 6’3 187lbs 21 Xavier
After taking Wiggins with the first pick, the second round is all about filling holes with pieces that show long term potential. Christian is long and athletic and a great ball handler. He has the Potential to be a true point guard and an improvement over Brandon Knight especially if he can find his jump shot.

32.   Philadelphia: Mitch Mcgary, PF/C 6’10 250lbs 21 Michigan
McGary will be a huge energy player off the bench for the 76ers that could back up either Thad or Noel. He is a good athlete for his size and is a great rebounder and shot blocker. May be a bit injury prone and that’s the only reason he drops this far.

33.   Cleveland: Glenn Robinson III, SF 6’6 210lbs 20 Michigan
The Cavs take a second SF in the draft. They really need help at the 3 and Robinson can play the 2 also. He is a great athlete and a good offensive player, he can help the Cavs off the bench.

34.   Dallas: LaQuinton Ross, 6’8 225lbs 21 Ohio St
The Mavericks do not have a small forward on the roster next year and Ross is a scorer at heart but can do a little bit of everything pretty well. He is a good fit and will be a solid back up for whoever they bring in.

35.   Utah: Spencer Dinwiddie, G 6’6 200lbs 21 Colorado
Spencer Dinwiddie is a very skilled combo guard that can play the 1 and the 2 and can back up the Burk bros. If he can stay healthy he could be very good but injuries have him dropping this far.

36.   Milwaukee: Jarnell Stokes, PF 6’8 250lbs 20 Tennessee
Stokes may be a little undersized but he is very strong and physical and one of the best rebounders in the draft. He adds talent and depth to the Bucks bench

37.   Toronto: DeAndre Daniels, SF 6’7 191lbs 22 UCONN
DeRozan needs somebody that can back him up without their being too much of a fall-off in scoring. Daniels is a very good scorer and a good shooter. He is athletic and makes a perfect back up to DeRozan.

38.   Detroit: Aaron Craft, PG 6’2 190lbs 23 Ohio St
I am probably a lot higher on Aaron Craft than most but he is an all around good player and a pure point guard that excels on defense, which the pistons need. If he improves his jumper then he could be a Kirk Hinrich type player. Great fit.

39.   Philadelphia: Jordan Clarkson, G 6’4 180lbs 21 Missouri
Clarkson is a solid combo guard that can back up MCW or the newly drafted Gary Harris. He is more of a point guard because he has a pretty weak jump shot and he is an excellent ball handler. But he attacks like a 2. Could be a valuable piece to the rebuild.

40.   Minnesota: Isaiah Austin, PF 7’1 215lbs 20 Baylor
Isaiah Austin is a huge solid rebounder and can shoot 3s. He is a good fit in the system because Kevin Love is also those things. He could be a very good channing frye type bench player on this team.

41.   Denver: Vasilije Micic, PG 6’4 185lbs 20 Serbia
Micic is a skilled pure PG and a solid shooter. He could be a very good back up for Ty Lawson in the future and can contribute in the present as well.

42.   Houston: Bogdan Bogdanovic, SG 6’6 200lbs 21 Serbia
Second Serbian in a row. Bogdan is a solid all around shooting guard that can shoot, pass, and score. He might not come over right away but the rockets would love it if he would. He will be a great back up for Harden.

43.   Atlanta: Patric Young, PF/C 6’9 245lbs 22 Florida
Atlanta seems to love undersized big men from Florida. Hopefully this one is as good as Horford, or at least more healthy

44.   Minnesota: Russ Smith, PG 6’ 165lbs 23 Louisville
The wolves need depth all over and Russ is a proven winner. He will make a good back up to rubio and he is a high character guy that will be good in the locker room.

45.   Charlotte: James Michael McAdoo, PF 6’9 223lbs 21 UNC
McAdoo is a typical Bobcats player. High effort and good defense and a lot of potential, no offensive game. He is a good complement to Cody Zeller though.

46.   Washington: Jabari Brown, G 6’4 200lbs 21 Missouri
Brown is a sweet shooting combo guard that can back up Wall or Beal. He is a scorer at heart and can even play in the post a bit. He doesn’t really care for defense but he could be a solid contributor on this rising Wizards team

47.   Philadelphia: Nick Johnson, SG 6’3 200lbs 21 Arizona
Nick Johnson is a crazy athlete and a good shooter, scorer, and defender. He is a little undersized but could be very Monta Ellis-esque if he develops.

48.   Milwaukee: Joe Harris, SG 6’6 211lbs 22 Virginia
Harris is a lights out shooter with unlimited range and can even play a little defense. He has good size and could find a role off the bench on this new and improved Bucks team.

49.   Chicago: Keith Appling, PG 6’2 180lbs 22 Michigan State
Appling joins Michigan rival Stauskas  on the Bulls. Appling could make a great back up for rose as a pure point guard and floor manager.

50.   Phoenix: Jahii Carson, PG 5’10 175lbs 21 Arizona State
Carson is the smallest guy in the draft but he has elite athleticism. He could be the next Nate Robinson.

51.   Dallas: Dwight Powell, PF 6’9 227lbs 22 Stanford
Powell is a good athlete and a solid shooter. He also goes to Stanford so it can be assumed that he is smart. He is one of the better available players

52.   Philadelphia: Jordan Bachynski, C 7’2 248lbs 24 Arizona State
Bachynski is 7’2 and plays hard and gets rebounds and blocks shots. He is raw on offense and already 24 but based on his size and defense alone he is a solid pick by the 76ers. This is probably a reach, but why not?

53.   Minnesota: Cory Jefferson, PF 6’9 210lbs 23 Baylor
At this point of the draft, you either shoot for potential or immediate help. Jefferson could fall in to the helping category if somebody in the front court gets hurt, which seems to happen a lot for the wolves.

54.   Philadelphia: Thanasis Antetokoumpo, SF 6’7 210lbs 20 NBADL
The mini greek freak is basically the exact opposite of the 76ers first pick Jabari Parker as far as skill set goes. He is very raw on offense but could be a lock down defender because of his elite athleticism. Plus given his brothers potential might as well throw a late second round pick at him.

55.   Miami: CJ Fair, SF 6’8 212lbs 22 Syracuse
CJ Fair is a good player who is improving still. He is an athlete and is willing to defend, he will fit in nicely on the Heat

56.   Denver: Kheim Birch, PF 6’9 210lbs 21 UNLV
Birch adds some front court depth and has good potential. Probably wouldn’t see much play time though despite being the best fit available.

57.   Indiana: Deonte Burton, PG 6’1 185lbs 22 Nevada
The Pacers may need quite a bit to keep up the recent success with the loss of Lance Stevenson. Burton is a smart, reliable pure point guard who can finish in the lane and never turns the ball over. His jumper is weak and he is a little old but he could be a solid contributor.

58.   San Antonio: Damien Inglis, SF 6’9 250lbs 18 France
Inglis is tall and long and athletic. He can play excellent defense and is a very good rebounder. I don’t know how great his offensive game is but if anybody can find a play for him, Pop can.

59.   Toronto: Roy Devyn Marble, SG 6’6 200lbs 21 Iowa
Marble is a hard worker and is a very solid player. Very good pick up this late in the draft.

60.   San Antonio: Kendall Williams, PG 6’4 185lbs 22 New Mexico
Mr. Irrelevant could be a deep sleeper in this draft. He is big and quick. He has a good handle and a high IQ to go along with some sweet passing ability. And to top it off he is a solid shooter. He is a little old for his draft class but if he falls all the way to here then the Spurs could be getting a huge steal in the draft.
